So happy you've written about this Soph!!! Money is a topic I constantly struggle with and get embarrassed about because I don't know what I'm doing with it, but then equally, we're not taught at school how much to save a month or how much is too much for a block of cheese or which savings account is the best one for me right now??
Still something I'm learning to navigate, but better every month (I hope!!) and also trying not to be nervous to ask my friends for help. My friend just bought his first home, and he's very good at giving frank and reasonable advice on where it's okay to spend money and where maybe you should hang back, especially because I can be impulsive!
Ahh thank you !!! Honestly yes, once again so much of it goes back to education and how we weren't properly prepared for the big wide world.
Your friend sounds amazzzinggg and deffo someone you'd want to speak to about spending! I can still be impulsive but I'm nowhere near as bad as I used to be, but I think that's because I'm actively working on it otherwise I'd probably be bankrupt by now!
Such an interesting piece Soph!! Personally, my partner and I have always been super open with money and have regular chats about it which I’m SO thankful for. Because really, it is a daunting topic and could feel incredibly awkward, particularly based on how little we are taught it at school and therefore how taboo it feels (you make such a good point here!!).
Also, outside of relationships, I know people who speak about money in an uncomfortable, almost boastful, way which in turn totally shuts me off from opening up. It can be tricky topic to navigate in many ways, but being able to do so with your partner in a totally honest, non-judgemental way is so reassuring!
Thank you Harriet! I'm so glad you and your partner have those open conversations. They're definitely a little awkward at first - it's a bit like breaking the ice again isn't it?
100% with you on the boastful talk too, I don't think there's a real in between from people who talk about earning too much and people who talk about not earning enough when in reality most of us are probably in that middle ground.
This was a great read! I'm really glad that money and money talk are slowly becoming less taboo. I grew up knowing I was supposed to save with each paycheck, but with no idea how much or anything about the best bank accounts.
Now I have a pretty great spending and saving division, and I started investing about a year or two ago as well! My partner and I have always been somewhat open about our finances, and definitely more so since moving in together. It's an important topic to be able to discuss.
Thank you Michelle! I had the exact same experience from every adult in my life telling me to "save" but without much further direction - if it weren't for my dad sitting me down with those bloody spreadsheets and breaking up my earnings I don't know where I'd be 🤣
Amazing that you're investing now too! I'm so glad you and your partner can be open about money too. I'm quite an open book but Aid takes a little more work (once again down to upbringing I think), but t makes such a difference once it's all out in the open!
LOVE this! Hindsight is such a wonderful thing, but I do think if I could tell my younger self anything, it would be around money: not to assume it would always be available, and to save a little all the time.
I sometimes think back to all the shit outfits I’ve bought and the bad nights out I’ve been on (though sometimes this is an inevitable part of life!) and think about how much money I’d have if I had had a bit more restraint as a younger person, or had some inkling of how bad the economy would become 🙃 xx
Thank you Alanna! Yesss I had such a learning curve when I first began earning money and thinking it was limitless 🤣
Your second point hits the nail on the head too 😭 I bought SO many vile clothes during lockdown that went on Vinted without ever being worn. I would probs have much more to my name now if I found my love of crafts instead of purchasing sooner lol x
