Ooooh, this makes me LONG for this kind of connection to cooking! It's actually a topic that came up in a post I'm publishing later today. I WISH I felt the peace and satisfaction and connection you describe here. 🥲 You give me hope to ascribe to this! 👏😄
Same for me, I just don't have it in me at this time. I come home starving, which never helps the motivation to cook anything intricate, and I live in a rental that I'm moving out of soon in which I don't have a lot of utensils. All in all the perfect excuse to keep cooking the same old stuff over and over and complain about it while doing so!
It never helps when you come home hungry! And it’s so tough to enjoy cooking if you don’t love the kitchen you’re in. Best of luck with the move, I hope it resparks some joy!
I've always loved baking and find that I'm able to find a sweet sort of calm when I'm baking cookies or decorating cakes. But my relationship with cooking has been one that I've had to work on. I thought I hated it until I started making meals that I actually enjoyed the process of. And I find that I love cooking hearty winter meals the most -- they just feel like a big warm hug.
Loved this piece. Everything looks delicious and now I'm super hungry haha 🤎
Thank you so much Madeline! I’ve started enjoying cooking the way I enjoy baking because I almost solely cook meals I enjoy the process of, I think that’s the key to it! I loooove a good hearty winter meal too - I can’t wait for slow cooker weather to return 🤣
Those look amazing Soph! 😍 I had a similar experience. I used to not really like cooking, it was purely functional, and even more so when I was single. But since I started working from home, cooking diner has marked 'the end of my workday'. And I started to love it. It's a moment of wining down, listen to a podcast and transition to the evening. Ottolenghi is by far my favourite cook to learn from!
Thank you Marie! Oh I'm the exact same, I'm a nightmare at cooking for myself! 😂 That sounds lovely. I also listen to a podcast or audiobook while cooking - as you say, it's a moment to wind down. I've actually not followed anything by Ottolenghi but have heard such great things!
I love this. I really want to lean into the mindfulness and sensory experience of cooking to make it less of a chore and more of a fun, playful part of my day like you have.
Thank you so much Rose! You definitely can do this. My first tip would be to try new recipes - I’m so much more motivated to cook if I’m excited about the outcome!

Oh thank you! Honestly, I never would have thought I’d ever feel this way about cooking or stepping foot in the kitchen - there’s hope for you too! 🥰
