Hi you lovely lot!
I have some very exciting news to share today, which you’ve definitely already guessed from the title - I’m now an affiliate at bookshop.org!
This isn’t super major news for most, but I wanted to write a post about it so all of my subscribers are in the loop and I can link back to this if any future readers want to find out more.
Disclaimer: As is the nature of this post, it contains affiliate links.
So, what exactly does that mean?
Essentially, I’ll take a 10% commission if/when someone buys a book from bookshop.org via my affiliation. This can be done in two ways:
Affiliate links, where I’ll link to a book (for example, in one of my monthly reads pieces).
Through my bookshop.org shopfront, which will have lists you can directly shop from. On that note, if you have any requests for specific lists, please let me know! I love collating book collections and sharing my recommendations.
Cool, but why?
Well, for lots of reasons!
I love having a paid subscription model, but I know not everyone can afford to pay for my work each month (or even want to!) so this gives my lovely subscribers a chance to support me financially while also grabbing themselves a new book or two in the process. So many of you are bookworms, and we both win in this scenario!
I also love having a place to put all of my recommendations and faves. I do my monthly reviews, but I doubt newer subscribers are going to want to trawl through those to find a book they might like. The bookshop.org storefront makes it super easy to find books I recommend all in one place.
There are lots of different affiliate programmes out there, but I specifically chose bookshop.org because it actively supports independent bookstores and lines up with my values.
Its mission is literally “to financially support local, independent bookstores” and I’m all about indie bookstores getting well-needed love. Every time you buy a book via my affiliation, I get 10% and a further 10% goes towards its independent bookshop ‘pool’ - where all money is divvied out to participating bookstores.
If you have a specific store you want the money to go to then, as long as they’re signed up, you can select them as your chosen shop and they’ll receive it!
Bookshop.org is also a B-Corp, so it’s a little kinder to the planet too.
You can find out more about how bookshop.org works here.
Will anything change?
Other than me making a little cash if you buy a book I’ve linked, nothing is changing around here!
I’m not going to start recommending books for the sake of it - if it’s trash, it’s trash.
You’ll also notice a disclaimer at the start of a post wherever I’ve included affiliate links so you’re aware (it’s also the literal law to do this).
I adore the community I’ve built here and I’m so pleased I can share my love of books with you too. If you have any questions about this just let me know, I’ll be happy to answer them!
Thanks Soph! I was looking for an excuse to splurge on my TBR and now I have one!
Hello Soph.
I'm a writer on Substack and I found your post after searching to see if others on Substack are using Bookshop.org affiliate shopfront. I have set one up recently and been putting links to books I've read and recommended in my Substack posts and it was working. Today I went to upload a banner image and create a tab on my Substack website but I'm having trouble with it. The site seems to be returning errors. Can I ask, what has your experience of it been? Are you still using it? Any thoughts you're happy to share, I would really appreciate hearing.
