Not long ago I saw a member of a hygge Facebook group celebrating Falliday - a chance to welcome autumn with open arms.
I had to get on board.
So, this weekend I dedicated my time to celebrating Falliday and all the beauty that comes with the best season of the year. Technically, the first day of autumn isn’t until September 22nd but I wanted to celebrate early and give you a chance to get involved too!
Here’s how to enjoy Falliday, and what I got up to…
Decorate your space
September-December is my dream when it comes to home decor, particularly when decorating for autumn.
We don’t have a tonne of autumn decorations, but what we do have we got out at the weekend! Dried flowers, autumnal bedding and blankets, pumpkins galore…
I try to be savvy when it comes to decor so things can be used for years to come. That meant we didn’t need to buy much this year, but we still headed to various shops for a nosey - it’s in the spirit, after all. I picked up two garlands, one for our living room and one for our bedroom, some bedding and a pumpkin candle. My favourite autumnal candles are from Otter Candle Co in Pumpkin Spice, which we bought last year and you can see the pumpkin vessel by our TV, and Tesco’s 2023 autumn scent, so it was super tough to find one we liked as much this year. I think I might pick up another Otter Candle one anyway in a different style, considering the pumpkin vessels can be kept forever…
Also, tell me this isn’t the cutest bedding you’ve ever seen?!
Eat seasonally
Oh, we ate good at the weekend. The key here is to use seasonal ingredients and/or follow seasonal recipes. The slow cooker was put to good use, and I made spiced parsnip soup and chorizo and kidney bean stew in there. We had some fresh ingredients to make use of, too, so I baked an apple crumble and banana and chocolate chip muffins.
I also tried out this pumpkin and sage pasta recipe by
at and it was amazing! There’s nothing like a kitchen smelling of delicious food to warm your heart!
Notice the environmental changes
Autumn is my favourite time of year, and I particularly love going outside and seeing all the changes right in front of me; ripe green leaves turning fifty shades of orange; the air dropping a degree or two. This weekend we took a purposeful walk through our town and along the river to just indulge in all autumn has to offer.
On the way, we paid a visit to our favourite bakery to grab some treats. Is there anything better than walking in the fresh autumn air, leaves crunching underfoot, with a home-baked pastry in one hand and a warm drink in the other?
I also love noticing the new season in shops, too. Even thought we didn’t buy much, it’s always fun to see what seasonal stock different stores have.
Consume seasonal content
If you think I spent all weekend watching Gilmore Girls you’d be mostly correct. It’s the ultimate autumn show.
I also watched the launch of this year’s Strictly Come Dancing which officially marks the start of autumn in my opinion (IYKYK). We were hoping to start our Harry Potter rewatch but just didn’t get round to it, however if you want a Falliday of your own I definitely recommend a cosy autumnal film.
Anytime music was played, I chose this playlist by
from which is just autumnal perfection.I’m not great at reading more than one book at once, but if I was I’d have picked up a seasonal read for the weekend. Something like Gilmore Girls, just in book form.
Finally, on Sunday night it was the first home game of the season for our local ice hockey team. I love going to watch and support - if I could afford it, I’d have a season ticket - so we made our way to the rink. Ice hockey is, obviously, an autumn/winter sport so this really solidified the autumnal vibe for me. Even though we didn’t win it was still so much fun and such a lovely way to close off the Falliday weekend.
So, that was how I spent my Falliday! It was super duper wholesome and I loved being so present for an entire weekend. How do you welcome the new season? Do you think you’ll give Falliday a go? Let me know!
That pumpkin and sage pasta recipe looks and sounds delicious! One for my menu next week, that's for sure.
I'm obsessed with those bed sheets! Very cute. :) My favorite thing about shifting into Fall is trying new recipes and those look yummy. I'm looking forward to trying out a new crockpot soup recipe this weekend.
