One of my favourite things about books is their seasonality. Their ability to set the tone and take you to exactly where the characters are.
I love reading with the seasons - I recently bought a special edition of Carrie which I’ll be saving until October - and the weather is trying its best to warm up here in the UK, so here are five books on my TBR pile that I’m hoping to read this summer…

Happy Place by Emily Henry
I don’t typically reach for romance books, but I always enjoy a good summer romance novel. In Happy Place, Harriet and Wyn must pretend to still be together (despite breaking up six months ago) to enjoy their annual summer getaway with their closest friends one last time.
I’ve heard such good things about Happy Place and it sounds like the perfect summer read.
The Girl He Needs by Kristi Rose
Despite saying I don’t typically reach for romances, here’s another on the list. I bought The Girl He Needs during a Stuff Your Kindle Day last year. It’s an enemies to lovers trope based in Daytona Beach, Florida - what more could you ask for?!
Abroad in Japan by Chris Broad
I’ve had my eye on this for months, and I’ve heard amazing things about it too, so when I saw it in a Waterstones offer I just had to grab it.
Abroad in Japan is Broad’s memoir about his decade living in the country, and includes all 47 prefectures of Japan. I’ve always wanted to travel there so I’m looking forward to reading about Broad’s experiences… plus, isn’t it the best pun in a book title ever?
Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus
I received my copy of Lessons in Chemistry as a Secret Santa gift at my book club last Christmas. A few months before, almost everyone I saw at Hay Festival was reading it in the sunshine, so I have high hopes.
Set in the 1960s, chemist Elizabeth Zott has her own cooking show which has a scientific twist. Through this show, Elizabeth is teaching women to challenge the world around them. I’m really looking forward to all the nostalgia feels!
Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati
I LOVE a good Greek mythology retelling, and for me these books need to be read in the summer because, well, Greece. I can’t think of it without thinking of sunshine.
Clytemnestra retells the story of the goddess from her perspective, and I’m not sure I’ll be able to put it down.
So, there are five books on my summer TBR list - although the actual list is much longer! What books are you hoping to read this summer, or winter if you’re in the southern hemisphere?
